We stayed at the Montgomery Mansion on a Saturday night and it was just lovely. It was our first time staying at a bed and breakfast. Our hosts were not only accommodating but very kind. We stayed in the Heather suit. The best was very comfortable and I could live in that bathroom! The Jacuzzi tub was huge and the sauna shower was fantastic. The breakfast was so good we couldn’t stop eating. We loved it and cant wait to come back mystery dinner.
Butch & Shirley were very good hosts. They made us very comfortable. Room was fantastic. Everything was just perfect. View was great. Away and quiet, but not far away from major cities. Breakfast was wonderful. All the food was tasty and well prepared.
The Mansion is so beautiful inside and out. Our room was great (Holly Room), the bed was super comfortable and I loved the copper tub! Breakfast was delicious the next morning (homemade egg casserole, blueberry scones, crepes, yogurt, OJ…) with more food than we could possibly eat. The owners are so nice too.
My wife and I booked the Mansion for our wedding, it couldn’t have been more beautiful and everyone had a wonderful time. The owners were extremely helpful and accommodating, even going so far as to provide the glassware, silverware, and china. After the wedding we stayed in the Heather Suite, and the room was super comfortable and luxurious.
Perfect place for a romantic overnight stay. I took my wife here as a surprise for her birthday. The owners are very accommodating and make you feel right at home. The place is beautiful and the pecan french toast is wonderful.
Butch and Shirley made us feel right at home from the start. I took my wife here for a romantic birthday getaway. We went to dinner nearby and spent the night enjoying the Heather Suite. The house is gorgeous and is steeped in history and character. Breakfast was tremendous. The Pecan French Toast was superb. Highly recommended.
My wife and I were looking to get away for our wedding anniversary and we couldn’t have found a more lovely place to stay at. We had never stayed here before and it was a lovely home and a pleasant discovery. Small little quiet town away from the crowds and traffic. Shirley and Butch were wonderful hosts and excellent conversationalists that we enjoyed discussing all kinds of subjects with.
Montgomery Mansion is a beautiful house with a wonderful couple running it. Shirley and Butch are very friendly and welcoming, telling us all about the history of the house and giving us a tour of all the rooms. We stayed in the Heather Suite which is really a bedroom, a large bathroom and a separate room with tv. Shirley serves a great breakfast in the morning with lots of choices. It was a great stay but keep in mind that although the mansion is pretty much perfect, there is absolutely nothing to do in this town. And everything is closed here on Sunday.
We planned a weekend getaway in the Pittsburgh area for our 10th wedding anniversary. We had never stayed at a B&B before and decided to give it a go. Unfortunately all the B&Bs in the city were full, so we decided on this one, as it was a reasonable distance from the city. Turned out that we didn’t mind being a little ways away and the location was just fine. The photos online do not do this place justice, it is amazingly beautiful! Every square inch is decorated with antique Victorian style, and it is breathtaking. We stayed in the Heather Suite, and it was like something out of a magazine. The best part, however, was the hosts! Butch and Shirley are so friendly, approachable, and accommodating, and it was a very pleasantly different experience from anything we’d done before. Not to mention, the breakfast is out of this world! We left each morning for our adventures rested and full. It was amazing and we are definitely looking forward to visiting again.
The rooms were so beautiful detailed with the antique furniture and accessories you become lost in another world. The bed was comfortable, breakfast was superb and conversations were great. I would highly recommend this beautiful home for others. Claysville is the ideal small town with friendly folks and easy location to the interstate. Easy to find this beautiful home and well worth the stay. Love you Butch and Shirley.
The welcome was a very warm and wonderful , Shirley and Butch were wonderful Hosts , I also own a B&B for 20 yr. And these folks are doing every thing Right.. the rooms are clean, decorated just right. Shirley has a great way of doing that. ever thing was perfect ! . Breakfast was Wonderful! and was hard to leave any thing on your plate. Would love to go Back. What a treat. Mary Jane@Dutch Pride B&B.
We went on our baby moon! It was perfect!! A romantic getaway at Montgomery Mansion! My dream Victorian home! Very very welcoming and accommodating! Sweet people who get you anything you need! And make you a amazing breakfast! Their house is a fairytale! Highly recommended it was perfect!!
Beautiful place that they both obviously take a lot of pride in showing off. They never intended to become innkeepers, but lucky for Claysville they did. Two of the private bathrooms are really unusual, particularly the bath that has a sauna/shower combo.
We made reservations several weeks in advance. We got there, and were greeted by a nice welcome message on a chalkboard with our names on it. Butch and Shirley were very friendly, knowledgeable about the area (both attractions and dining) and really made us feel like we were visiting family. We had the room on the upper floor, which was spectacular. The bathtub was really great to relax in and we enjoyed the huge TV in the adjoining media room. Breakfast was good and plentiful… quiche, french toast, bacon, yogurt and granola, bacon, fruit cup, and a fantastic orange drink that she blended for us. We also enjoyed just sitting and talking with them before we left. We will definitely be booking another night or weekend there!
We stayed here for a weekend get away in early October. Beautiful old mansion with fascinating woodwork and history. Our room was the Heather suite which has a huge bathroom with a jaccuzi tub, steam shower, double vanities and plenty of plush towels. Our bedroom was well appointed and included a sitting area which is the tower on the front of the house (great for late night reading) that had double stained glass doors. With this room you get the use of an adjacent living room complete with a large flat panel screen. When we arrived back from dinner in nearby Washington, fresh brownies awaited us in our room. Breakfast was amazing, Shirley make amazing pecan praline French toast, quiche and we also had yogurt with a dish of toppings, an orange Julius style drink and an assortment of breads and juices. Butch kept us entertained while breakfast was prepared. We will definitely stay here again, it is why we choose bed and breakfasts over hotels as it is the epitome of what a bed and breakfast is all about.
My two daughters and I spent one night at the magnificent Montgomery Mansion on our way back to NJ from Ohio. The owners couldn’t be nicer, more helpful or more welcoming. We were pampered from the moment we walked in the door. The whole place is just stunning, with amazing attention to detail. Our rooms were packed with everything we could ask for, including toiletries, cookies, and hundreds of DVDs to choose from. The steam/shower was a wonderful way to start the day. Breakfast was divine, with amazing homemade treats including quiche and scrumptious pecan French toast. We are so grateful to Butch and Shirley for making this a wonderful way to end our vacation!
This place is great! Service was great and the owners are such nice people. I will be back! This place is easy to find and close to main roads. It was very clean and bed was very vomfortable. I would definitely recommend you check this place out. Breakfast was awesome and large, with a good variety.
There are no words to accurately describe it! The mansion was immaculate and perfectly decorated, the host and hostess were charming, gracious, and so incredibly friendly, the bed was heaven, and breakfast was scrumptious!! I can’t wait to go back. P.s. Make sure to take a soak in the copper bath tub. Amazing.
My wife and I were looking for a great place to stop over in on our way to visit family in Pennsylvania, and this B&B just happened to be on the way. I am so glad we did! The home was absolutely beautiful, and Butch and Shirley were gracious hosts. We stayed up late and talked about the history of the home over coffee. We then got to experience the copper tub which was pretty awesome. Add to that a home-cooked, three-course breakfast before we had to head out, and it made for an awesome stay. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone traveling through the area.
My wife and I were looking for a romantic anniversary getaway, and we needed to look no further than Claysville, PA! The Montgomery Mansion is located 15 minutes away from a wonderful outlet center, a huge strip mall, and even a Cabellas. Butch and Shirley will happily direct you to any of these locations, and more! They gave us history of the house and surrounding area, and shared experiences and stories of how they came to own such a lovely B&B. The breakfast that they provide is incredible; so much extremely good food! The house was absolutely beautifully decorated. All in all we had an amazing time for the two days we spent with them.
Booked one night in the Holly room for a weekend getaway. Butch and Shirley were very welcoming, offering good conversation and refreshments upon out arrival. Their dinner reccomendation of the Union Grill in downtown Washington was spot on for us. By far the best part of our stay was soaking in our room’s copper claw foot tub – with lavendar mineral salts it was simply decadent. In the morning a full breakfast of quiche, sausage, bacon, eggs, fruit, yogurt and delicious pecan french toast was served elegantly in their dining room. Although it was a short visit we drove home feeling relaxed as if we had been away for much longer. Many thanks to Butch and Shirley for their hospitality.
My husband and I wanted a couple’s weekend away. We found Montgomery Mansion on the internet and decided this was where we wanted to go. We arrived to being greeted by Butch and Shirley. This wonderful couple sat down and talked to us about the history of the building, city and the people of the town. Then we went to our room (Heather and Evelyn Suites). The architecture of the B&B was beautiful. Our room was cozy and our bathroom was beautiful. We watched a movie on the 60″ tv and then enjoyed the soaking tub and sauna. After we woke up, you went downstairs to eat breakfast. Shirley made a delicious breakfast. Would definitely recommend staying here. Hope to go back soon. Thank you for the wonderful experience!
We stayed at the Montgomery Mansion for our anniversary and had a wonderful time. Booked the Holly Suite. Mansion was beautifully decorated for the holidays. Holly Suite had an incredible copper tub and amazing shower. Bed was comfortable. Butch and Shirley were very accomodating and the hot breakfast was delicious (quiche, cinnamon french toast, bacon). Went to see the Oglebay lights and Shirley had hot cocco and cookies baking for us when we returned. Pop and water were available in the mini-fridge. Spent some time in the family room down stairs learning about the history of claysville/the mansion and watched some TV. There is a cute covered bridge not too far from the mansion and it is only about 20 minutes from downtown Wheeling. Even closer to the Cabelas exit where the newer shops and restaurants are. If we are ever back in southwest PA, we would stay again. The only downside was the old windows are very thin and I could hear the I-70 traffic through out the night, but that is mainly because I am not used to being near interstates.
My sister and sisters-in-law and I had a delightful afternoon at the Montgomery Mansion B & B in Claysville, Pa. The house is beautifully restored. Butch made the tour very enjoyable with his anecdotes and jokes. The tea and desserts were delicious. Butch and Shirley made us feel like family and I am sure it would be a wonderful place to stay. Claysville is a slice of “small town America” – don’t miss it!
We stayed in the Heather suite which is absolutely gorgeous. The bathroom has a sauna, shower and whirlpool tub. So relaxing. We had the tv room and were able to relax and watch a movie, read a book or take a quiet nap. The mansion is beautifully decorated and has such an interesting history that the Smith’s shared with us. We felt very welcome and right at home. The breakfast was decadent to say the least and the table was impeccably set. We are parents of young children and are always taking care of them so it was amazing to be on the receiving end for a change. There is plenty to do nearby with the Tanger Outlets, The Meadows, shops, Cabela’s and Wheeling casinos and restaurants. We will definitely be returning again and again.
This was my pick for our 10th anniversary. My wife loved everything from the look of the place to the kindness of our hosts. It only took me 10 years to finally get something right. I’d reccomend this as a weekend getaway anytime.
This is an exceptional B&B to stay at! Butch and Shirley are fantastic as is the home! the impressive Victorian decor is over the top good! will be coming back again for sure! the history of the home and the area is terrific. the hosts are warm and delightful people who make you feel comfortable and relaxed.
Every single detail was exceptionally thought of and attended to…my husband and I traveled 4-1/2 hours from opposite directions after work to meet for our 19th anniversary. We were met by 2 of the most attentive hosts waiting with homemade cookies in hand graciously leading us into the parlor to meet for a spell. There was no rush any part of the weekend. Our package included a massage the next day for my husband. Breakfasts were made from scratch and the table was prepared with thought and elegance in mind. In every way possible, we felt like we stepped back in time as the home is a fully renovated Painted Lady Victorian Mansion. It was absolutely a delight to stay in the Heather Suite which is the Honeymoon Suite. It’s the updated accommodations as it comes with a hot tub and steam room which is also a shower. It has a reading room that is naturally lit from the skylights that the top of the mansion allows in. It also has a TV room with a big screen TV and a recliner and couch offering a great variety of DVDs if movie viewing is of interest. We had bottled water readily accessible to us at the landing on the 2nd floor which was very convenient and greatly appreciated. We also LOVED the cookies that the hosts thoughtfully put in a covered glass server on the dresser. I HIGHLY recommend this Bed and Breakfast. The personal touch IS what made our experience VERY MEMORABLE!
I really enjoyed the weekend we celebrated in this gorgeous B&B. Our hostess and host Shirley Smith and Butch Smith were friendly and really happy to make sure we had a pleasant stay. They also helped us find places of local interest and restaurants in the vicinity..The breakfast was really special and was so much more then we expected. We have stayed at other B&B’S and had just a Continental Breakfast. But Shirley really out did herself with farm fresh eggs casserole and Amish bacon, fresh ground coffee and fresh jams and preserves. I am looking forward to another visit and stay at the Montgomery Mansions.
Shirley and Butch are very gracious hosts. I was welcomed to this beautiful old mansion by Butch, who was very careful to make sure I was comfortable having a gentleman greeting me, as I was a woman alone. He gave me a tour of the their home and then I was shown to the Holly Room, which is a one of a kind. The large bathroom has a solid antique copper claw foot bath tub, a once in a life-time site to see. This spacious bathroom also features a solid brass surround shower and tile floors. I cannot say enough about the breakfasts Shirley prepared. I ask for toast, yogurt and a banana, diet don’t you know; Shirley served me an assortment of, waffles, bacon, fruit, yogurt with Amish granola, quiche and great coffee (loved the french toast). In the evenings, there was always cookies, fruit and cold drinks and coffee available. The location was great for my stay, as I was visiting family and friends from Wheeling, WV, Claysville, Avella, and Washington, PA. and the Montgomery Mansion has easy access to all those locations. Shirley was so warm and helpful, and Butch was a true gentlemen. Since my husband was not along on this trip, Butch even helped me load up my car (which was not easy, as I had purchased a huge tricycle flower stand) and he even made sure I got out of the driveway safely. I stayed for 4 nights and felt very much at home. I would definitely stay at Montogomery Mansion again and recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
Having stayed at other B&B in the past the Montgomery Mansion exceeded my expectations by far. They are so very welcoming and cater to every detail. The room was beautiful everything was thought of from the bubble bath and bath salts to every other detail. The breakfast was wonderful bacon, eggs, fruits, assorted syrups and teas, yogurt from the local Amish which was very good. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a beautiful and peaceful experience.
My husband and I spend an amazing anniversary weekend at the Montgomery Mansion. The owners, Butch and Shirley Smith are outgoing, great conversationalists and care that their guests enjoy a red-carpet experience! We were welcomed with a personal message on the little board by the front door, and Shirley gave us the grand tour of the property before escorting us to our amazing suite on the third floor of the mansion. Our king bed, ensconced in 1000 count sheets was incredibly comfortable, and we loved the marble bathroom, complete with a sauna and 2 person shower and jacuzzi. Shirley loves to provide little details for her guests, including an amazing assortment of bath gels, lotions and lavender linen spray, vases of fresh roses (from her garden) throughout the suite, chocolates at bedtime and evening snacks. She also keeps a well stock mini refrigerator for her guests usage on the second floor. Guests are treated to incredible candlelight breakfasts served in the dining room on Royal Dolton Old Country Rose china. Shirley is an excellent cook and serves so many selections that one leaves the table with no possible extra room. Each evening we enjoyed relaxing on the front porch while seated on the white wicker porch swing. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay and can hardly wait to return in a few months! For those looking for a wonderful bed and breakfast experience in a beautifully preserved Victorian mansion, be sure to make your reservations soon!
